Frequently asked questions
How do I start a game?
Pick a time control — either dial one in with the wheels or tap a preset such as Blitz 3 + 2 — then tap Start. Tap your side of the screen when you finish a move to pass the clock to your opponent.
How does the clock actually work?
The screen is split in two. The half facing your opponent is rotated so it reads the right way up from their side. Whoever is on move has the running clock; tapping your half stops your time and starts theirs.
What is increment (the “+2” in 3 + 2)?
Increment is Fischer time: a fixed number of seconds added to your clock each time you complete a move. A 3 + 2 game gives each player 3 minutes plus 2 seconds per move. Set increment to 0 for a game with no added time.
Can I create my own time controls?
Yes. Set the minutes, seconds, and increment with the wheels and tap “Save as preset” to keep it in your list. Swipe a saved control to edit or delete it.
How do I pause a game?
Tap the pause button in the bar between the two clocks. Tap play to resume, or the ✕ to end the game and return to setup.
Does it work offline?
Yes — completely. Chess Clock needs no internet connection, no account, and no sign-up. Everything runs on your device.
Does it work in landscape?
Yes. Rotate the device and the two clocks sit side by side, which suits a board placed between two players.
What is “Buy me a coffee”?
An entirely optional one-time tip that supports development. The app is free and has no ads, no subscriptions, and no locked features — tipping unlocks nothing, and the prompt disappears for good once you have tipped.
I tipped but was charged twice, or the purchase did not go through.
Purchases are handled by Apple, so refunds and billing questions go through them: visit reportaproblem.apple.com and sign in with your Apple Account. If a payment was taken but the app still shows the tip prompt, email us and we will help you sort it out.
Does the app collect any of my data?
No. Chess Clock collects nothing, contains no analytics or tracking, and never sends your data anywhere. Your saved time controls stay on your device. See the privacy policy for details.
Troubleshooting
The clock keeps running when the screen locks
Chess Clock keeps the screen awake while a game is running. If your device still sleeps, check that Low Power Mode is off, or increase Settings → Display & Brightness → Auto-Lock.
My saved time controls disappeared
Saved controls live on the device. Deleting and reinstalling the app removes them, and they are not synced between devices. Restoring from a device backup restores them.
The tip prompt is still showing after I paid
Force-quit the app and reopen it so it can finish processing the purchase. If it persists, email us with the date of purchase and we will look into it.
Sound or haptics are not working
Check that your device is not in Silent mode, and that Settings → Sounds & Haptics → System Haptics is on.
Purchases & refunds
Chess Clock is free. The only purchase is an optional one-time “Buy me a coffee” tip, handled entirely by Apple through In-App Purchase — we never see or store your payment details.
Refunds are issued by Apple, not by us. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com using the Apple Account that made the purchase. If something looks wrong on our side, email us and we'll help.
Your privacy
Chess Clock collects nothing. There are no accounts, no analytics, no tracking, no ads, and no network requests — the app works fully offline and your saved time controls never leave your device.
